- Abstract
- The synergy between science and technology breeds innovation. Computation can be leveraged to solve scientific problems, and in turn, science inspires the core foundation on which these methods are built. Neural networks, a subset of deep learning, are based on the biological mechanism in which neurons fire within the brain. In my research, I work at this intersection by utilizing deep neural networks to predict whether certain molecules can penetrate the defense barrier of the brain and thus potentially achieve therapeutic effect on neurological diseases. All artifacts in this artwork are produced from code and computational chemistry software that I use in my research. The molecules entering the top of the deep neural network illustrate the diversity and creativity that can be encapsulated in chemical structure when designing therapeutics. The 3D image of the open brain is constructed from 109 slides of an MR study of the head from Stanford’s data archive. I chose one half of the brain to resemble molten lava and the other half to be cooler in tone to represent the duality in human nature, and often, technology.
