- Abstract
- The ocean. So free, so vast, so wide. Limitless. The body of waterWhere fishes live, coral reefs die,and the human species goes for a dive. The cruises…ControlledConfinedAnd with one route in mind. A place to enjoy and relaxTo get drinks and good laughsAnd the ultimate place to escape, when life gets rough. —I love the ocean. It brings me peace, joy and awakens my most adventurous self. I studied marine life and mangroves for years and am ashamed of the impact man-made goods like cruises and trash have on our wildlife. However, in 2021, a year after my grandma passed away, I took my mom on her first cruise -and trip- since her mother’s departure. As we stepped onboard her uncertainty was evident, but the pool deck opened a new world. She discovered a world as vivid as my grandma’s spirit and a crowd as diverse as the ocean below. This cruise reenergized her and demonstrated that there was still joy to be found and adventures to be lived. So, an ocean for me and a cruise ship for you, we each have our battles and that which gets us through.
