- Abstract
- The world is entering a new era where research tools are becoming more accessible. Historically, motion analysis has required expensive equipment to take precise measurements, which could only be performed in a laboratory. However, the continued development of open-source software has allowed researchers to develop methods to replace this hardware with software. My research uses GoPro cameras, just like the ones you may have at home, along with some clever algorithms, to track motion anywhere we want with the same fidelity as hardware-based methods. Recently, we have used these techniques to perform gait analysis on foals as they grow. Using this data coupled with computer models, we can better understand how horse bones develop during growth and test different exercise programs that aim to strengthen bone. This same technology can be applied to humans to eventually develop exercise programs that can benefit humans and animals alike.
