Abstract

The research exemplified by Auto Retrato Uno emerges through auto-ethnographic, Puerto Rican, and genealogical histories centered on male subjectivity. This example of a series of memory-based artworks addresses various things: Puerto Rican place, space, history, culture, religion, and its compounding effects on the representation of masculinity through the lens of figurative and commercial artwork. This ongoing series also considers and negotiates Puerto Rican urgencies around femicide, homophobia, and transphobia through an understanding of male Puerto Rican behavior and affect. The exploratory nature of this investigation is about working alongside sociological approaches like the semi-structured interview, open-coding, and content analysis with the authors social context to produce illustrations and written narratives as cultural artifacts.
