- Abstract
- Imagine you can focus electromagnetic power with your hand, like a superhero in Marvel movies. We achieve this by developing a wearable metasurface, as an artificial electromagnetic material, made on a flexible substrate. To the right of the image, we attach the metasurface to the back of a hand to collect and transfer power to the palm. The metasurface composes of an array of strongly coupled resonators, which can form on-demand electromagnetic modes through near-field coupling. The metasurface can boost power density at the desired locations hundreds of times. It is used to power implanted medical devices and sensors such as pacemakers with ambient radiofrequency power (to the left of the image). With the help of our invented device, medical implants would no longer need to replace batteries. Furthermore, the battery-free medical sensors can be made small, light, and low-cost, benefiting early diagnosis and physiological monitoring of millions of patients.
