- Abstract
- I found my design interest in non-design practice: being an RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) who delivers behavior analysis services to Autistic children in their homes and the clinic. I started my research by designing learning tools for Autistic children, aiming to help them gain essential life skills and eliminate undesirable behaviors. However, after researching the family of Autistic children, I have changed my view from a traditional medical model of disability to a social model of disability. I realized that, instead of trying to “normalize” the children that might cause potential harm, we need to provide more support to the parents/primary caregivers, give them more social support, reduce their life burden, and allow them to take better care of children. This ongoing mixed-reality model design project depicts the home environment of a child with autism. I will utilize AR technology to visualize the main stressors of parents of an Autistic child compared to parents of a typical-developing child, as well as the different challenges that dad and mom meet, drawing attention to parents’ life situations from the public.
