- Abstract
- The digitisation of museum exhibitions through web-based virtual tours grew popular during the Covid-19 pandemic to maintain audience engagement when physical access was limited. However, little follow-up research has examined their potential in supporting museums' long-term goals for accessibility and inclusivity. This poster maps use cases of digitised exhibitions in the UK’s cultural heritage sector, highlighting illustrative examples that use 3D modelling and web-based virtual tour platforms in facilitating inclusive curatorial practices. Building on these, it presents Lyrics of Labour: Women, Work, and Song in Scotland, a multilingual digital exhibition prototype developed as part of an ongoing doctoral study where it is used as an action research tool to engage UK-based minority language and multilingual communities. Feedback from focus groups was thematically analysed to understand the perceptions, preferences, and needs of linguistically diverse audiences. Preliminary findings indicate that language influences experiences of exhibitions, with factors such as accessibility, cultural respect, translation, and visual aesthetics emerging as key considerations for a linguistically inclusive online exhibition environment.
