- Abstract
- Introduction. This study investigates the integration of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in European iSchools' education, noting a gap between its recognized importance and actual curricular implementation. Despite DEI's foundational role in library values, systematic research on its presence in European iSchools' curricula is limited. Method. A two-phase exploratory study was conducted across 18 European iSchools. Phase one involved content analysis of Master-level course syllabi. Phase two surveyed instructors on their perceptions and teaching experiences regarding DEI topics. Data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Analysis. Syllabi and survey responses were analyzed for DEI topic presence, focus, depth, course offerings, institutional practices, and teaching approaches. Results. Only 12 of 18 schools offered DEI-related courses, mostly electives, addressing DEI partially. While 71% of instructors valued DEI highly, only 37% felt their programs addressed it substantially. Age, disability, and general diversity were most discussed; race, gender, and religious diversity received limited attention. Faculty preparedness and institutional prioritization were key challenges. Conclusions. The study reveals a persistent gap between DEI's recognized importance and its inconsistent, often peripheral, curricular integration in European iSchools. LIS programs should treat DEI as foundational, promoting systematic faculty training and curricular development to serve diverse societies.
