Abstract
Introduction. This literature review summarizes previous research in the intersection between Sámi knowledge organization (KO), Sámi/other Indigenous views on AI and AI-assisted KO to suggest guidelines for future research in this field. Method. Articles were collected using a snowball approach complemented by keyword searches across interdisciplinary databases. Results. The literature from the three junctions of Indigenous KO, Indigenous AI and AI-assisted KO all align with Sámi research ethics in this respect: research on AI-assisted KO for Sámi archival collections should be participatory and community-grounded with empowerment as an end goal. AI systems should integrate Indigenous knowledges and the community should be involved in their design, implementation and evaluation. Conclusion. Researching AI for Sámi archives is a complex endeavor which requires careful consideration of research ethics. It should strive for shared authority with the Sámi community in the entire research cycle.
