- Abstract
- Introduction. The aim of this scoping review is to map the research literature published in English and in peer-reviewed journals related to public library practices for supporting literacy in the early years (0-8 years). Method. A five-stage framework for conducting a scoping review was used for reviewing the selected articles. A systematic search was conducted in Scopus database, along with forward and backward searching. Empirically-based research, including qualitative and/or quantitative, were included. Analysis. A thematic analysis approach was adopted to analyze the articles selected in order to identify main themes on public library practices for supporting literacy in the early years. Results. Preliminary findings provide insights into multiple dimensions of the library practices for supporting literacy in the early years, including: space planning, services and activity design, and professional development for library staff. Cross-cutting themes emerging from the review are also identified, including equity of access, integration of technology, and sustainability and wellbeing. Conclusion. This scoping review yields studies that are primarily publish in library and information science literature. This review also identifies gaps for research and proposes important direction for future research and practices.
