- Abstract
- This essay considers what performances of Haydn's and Hummel's trumpet concertos sounded like through the lens of the keyed trumpet and Anton Weidinger, the designer/performer who debuted these works. Most scholars and performers view these works retrospectively through a modern lens, using current editions on today's equipment. This essay aims to offer performers and audiences another perspective on how to approach these works through period practices and a performer's familiarity with a reproduction of a keyed trumpet. Included is biographical information on Weidinger, his performances, and the instrument he used and developed during his life. Also included is a discussion of applicable period practices, along with observations of the challenges of the keyed trumpet compared to a modern instrument. Finally, a performer's analysis of both works, using information gathered from previous sections and with facsimile study, resulted in trumpet parts for both works as this author envisions Weidinger's performances.
