- Abstract
- Orchestral excerpts are central to flute pedagogy and audition preparation, yet they are often practiced through repetition without clear strategies for addressing underlying technical and musical challenges. Existing resources provide valuable interpretive guidance but at times lack a systematic approach to skill development. This thesis proposes a pedagogical model that shifts excerpt preparation toward an analytical, problem-solving approach by deriving targeted exercises directly from the musical material of the repertoire. Focusing on five of the most frequently requested orchestral excerpts identified through canvassing 22 professional audition lists from the past decade, this study presents exercises that address key challenges including breath control, articulation, rhythm, intonation, tone color, and phrasing. Each excerpt is broken down into specific focus areas, with progressive exercises designed to isolate technical issues and gradually reintegrate musical context. In addition to offering tools for preparation, this thesis aims to encourage performers to develop individualized practice strategies and greater independence in musical decision-making. By bridging the gap between etude and fundamental studies and excerpt practice, this project contributes a structured and adaptable framework to flute pedagogy, supporting more efficient, intentional and musically informed approaches to the flute orchestral excerpt preparation.
