Abstract
The All-Night Vigil is the primary evening service used in the east-Slavic Orthodox tradition on Saturdays and eves of Feasts in anticipation of the eucharistic Divine Liturgy. The
Orthodox Church in America largely abandoned its use throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Due to new demographic trends, there is a push to re-establish the use of the Vigil, but this is complicated by a lack of institutional knowledge regarding the service due to this gap in regular performance. This project seeks to mitigate difficulties in performing the Vigil and provide resources to assist in its restoration, primarily in the form of a comprehensive collection of the Ordinary and Proper music of the Vigil. To facilitate the effective use of this collection, this project analyzes the form, text and liturgical systems, and musical characteristics of the Vigil, focusing especially on the 8-Tone systems used for rendering of the Proper. This musical
collection and the results of this analysis are intended to provide choir directors in this tradition the materials and resources necessary to restore the regular performance of the Vigil.
