Abstract
The results of an investigation of the production of g- hyperons in K-p interactions at 5.5 BeV/c are presented. The data were obtained from a 400,000 picture exposure of the MURA 30’’ hydrogen bubble chamber at the Argonne National Laboratory.
Production cross sections for the Ξ final states and for the Ξ* (1530) and K * (890) resonances are given. Center of mass angular distributions in the 2, 3, and quasi-3 body final states are characterized by the forward peaking of the Ξ-. An exception is the Ξ-K+Φ final state in which the Φ meson is observed to go forward in the center of mass.
The Ξ -π distribution has evidence for the production of the Ξ* (1930) resonance. The mass and width are 1955 ± 14 MeV and 56 ± 26 MeV. A very narrow structure, r < 30 MeV, at a mass of 2295 ± 15 MeV is observed in the Ξ - π + π – mass distribution of the 4 and 5 body final states.
The mass of the Ξ- is measured to be 1321.8 ± 0.4 MeV. Details of a search for and the identification of Ω- hyperons are given. The mass of the Ω- is measured to be 1671.8 ± 0.9 MeV as determined from three unambiguous cases of Ω- production and decay.
