Abstract
This study compares how college undergraduates from the University of Illinois and Parkland College perceive the meanings and markings of social class as negotiated in the campus context. The following questions are addressed: How do college students understand class? Do they think it is an important factor in student lives? How do they negotiate class positions in relation to people in their environment? On the basis of six interviews, the study does not confirm the assumed class difference between students from the University of Illinois and students from Parkland College. The project includes a proposal for continued research.
