Abstract
"In view of many prejudiced cross-cultural comparisons of drama in the past, this dissertation proposes to discard Western theories of tragedy and comedy, and base the comparative study on the similar themes and social function of drama in the compared traditions. It investigates ""domestic drama"" as a feasible forum for the comparison of traditional Chinese and English plays."
Yuan tsa-chu and English domestic drama belong to the tradition of popular literature, which blends entertainment with instruction. Both moral and social, the two dramas share many similarities such as sensationalism, a familiar storyline, a common man/woman as the main character, domestic relations, and a happy ending. The first part of the dissertation studies how English domestic drama is defined, and how it can help to define certain Yuan tsa-chu as domestic drama. From the two groups of domestic plays the author selects four major themes for comparison.
The dramatic themes studied are arranged marriage, the prodigal husband, the virtuous wife, and the adulteress wife.
