Abstract
This project examines the foundation of friendships among ISU college students and aims to answer the following questions: What type of dormitory layout is best suited to foster a sense of community and to develop friendships? Are there differences in the foundation of friendships for students of different ages and graduation years? On the basis of participant research and seven interviews with freshman and senior informants, this research indicates that freshmen make friends primarily through the dorms and their classes, while seniors branch out more. Other factors that play a role in maintaining and strengthening friendships include food and similar beliefs, morals, and values.
