Abstract

This project focuses on the Swine Research Center (SRC) at the U of I to investigate what role it plays in the pork industry and how researchers work to resolve problems in an ethical manner. On the basis of literature research and interviews, the authors find that swine research primarily looks at the consequences of new foods for the pigs, such as genetic modified organisms (e.g. corn and soybean) and distiller-dried grain solubles, which is a byproduct of ethanol production for fuel. The funding for swine research comes from many places, most of which are commercial companies with which the department works closely. The studies and the adherence to ethical standards protect the welfare of the pigs and of humans.
