Abstract
The purpose of the study was to document the pedagogical beliefs, knowledge, skills and understandings manifested by an exemplary band conductor--Harry Begian. Four questions guided the study: (1) What personal, educational and professional experiences does Begian consider significant in his development as a musician and conductor? (2) What are the major tenets of Begian's philosophical position relative to bands and band conducting? (3) In what ways and to what extent are Begian's philosophical tenets reflected in his teaching of conducting? (4) In what ways and to what extent are Begian's philosophical tenets and principles reflected in his teaching and conducting of bands?
Statements were extracted from a review of the related literature to provide a philosophic framework for the construction of an interview guide salient to the professional work of Begian and representative of his tripartite philosophy of music education: the role of music/music education in society; the role of bands in the music/music education enterprise; the role of the conductor/teacher in conveying music to students and audiences. The investigator conducted an intensive interview with Begian, transcribed interview tapes, and compiled data to produce an accurate portrayal of his personal and professional life along with his philosophical position relative to bands and band conducting. Content analysis was employed to identify philosophies and principles captured on audiotapes from two conducting seminars. The tapes were transcribed, analyzed, and compiled to produce descriptive data about the philosophies and principles demonstrated in conducting classes. The final procedure employed observation of videotapes of Begian conducting band rehearsals. Description of the rehearsal transactions and content analysis were employed to document the extent to which his philosophies and principles were evident in his conducting of bands.
Analysis of Begian's philosophy of bands and band conducting, presentations in band conducting classes, and his conducting in rehearsals clearly established that Begian has developed and applies true professional competence in the field of bands and band conducting. A comparison of results for the analysis process provides possible clues to the thoughts and practices of a truly competent conductor.
