Abstract
In this paper, I discuss the results of an ethnographic project about the purpose of PRIDE at Illinois State University and how that purpose has evolved. Using interviews with four students and six participant observations on the ISU campus, I show that the purpose of PRIDE at Illinois State University can be found not only on the institutional level, but also an individual level. Based on these preliminary findings, I argue that PRIDE is a registered student organization (RSO) that is always evolving to fit the interests of its members. My recommendations to the university include instating more “grouped” RSOs, and allow those grouped RSOs a vote in student government.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
