Howard Schein arrived at UIUC to do his PhD in Zoology in the late 1960s and finished the program in 1974. Then in 1978 Schein became the director of Allen Hall’s Living Learning Community, Unit One and he held this position until 2008. During his tenure as director of Unit One Schein was faced with the potential closing of Unit One, which led him to organize students to keep the program open. Although Schein is no longer the director of Unit One he is still active in the community.
The university offers an extraordinary opportunity to study and document student communities, life, and culture. This collection includes research on the activities, clubs, and durable social networks that comprise sometimes the greater portion of the university experience for students.
