Abstract

As in-person reference statistics continue to steadily decrease, the need for librarians to showcase the variety of resources and services they have to offer continues to increase. Information literacy initiatives seem to be the only way “bridge the gap” and tackle both of these issues (Maddison, 2013). Reference desk interactions provide librarians the perfect opportunity to bridge this gap by extending information literacy beyond the classroom. While working with students one on one at an in-person desk enables librarians to teach students efficiently, virtual interactions can be more challenging. Jing, a screencast tool made by TechSmith, allows librarians to facilitate learning with every interaction. Using Jing teaches students how to search, limit, and evaluate items themselves while still helping them find the item virtually. This poster session will focus on what types of chat interactions Jing is most suited for and how Jing compares to other screencast software, including Camtasia. Handouts will include sample chats that either utilized Jing or could have been improved by utilizing Jing as well as a guide on how to download and use Jing at your library.
