- Abstract
- While teaching a study abroad course in New Zealand, I was struck by a student's resemblance to Rodin's The Thinker. What intrigues me is the size of the men relative to the stones on which they sit. While Rodin's sculpture focuses attention on the man himself, my research exploring mens friendships as social justice attempts to interrogate social practices that regulate and influence mens understandings of themselves and social interactions with others. Critical social science can serve as a chisel emancipating men from rigid social practices that train them to be stoic and immovable in their interactions with others. Research can provide men opportunities for reflecting on their own beliefs to gain awareness about ways they have been molded through experiences negotiating expectations of themselves and others. The hope of my research is that by allowing men space for reflecting on their own negotiations of genders, (dis)abilities and sexualities that they will become more actively engaged in sculpting more inclusive social practices for all.
