Abstract
This paper provides methods that could be applied to obtain drift velocity models for coherent scatter F
region plasma. The drift velocity of the plasma is obtained from the autocorrelation function (ACF)
between adjacent voltage data. The velocity was obtained from the slope of the phase of the ACF, which
is obtained by un-weighted linear least squares fitting; however, the result suffered from the correlation
between neighboring data. The second method obtained the phase velocity based on the linear
relationship between the real and imaginary parts of the ACF. The phase velocity can also be obtained
by inspecting the spectrum of the ACF of the voltage data, where the drift velocity can be calculated
based on the amount of shift of the spectrum from the center. Nevertheless, the spectrum is distorted
due to the way ACF is generated, and therefore this method was not applied. Velocity maps, showing
the drift velocities with corresponding altitudes and geographical locations are constructed based on the
two methods mentioned above for multiple scans.
