Abstract

This paper is an attempt to present some issues and concerns that will have to be addressed as continued plans are made for library programs for young people that will serve them effectively in the coming decade. This Allerton Institute is a milestone in the history of the development of library service to American youth. What is now organized as three youth divisions of the American Library Association (ALA) The American Association of School Librarians (AASL), The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), and The Young Adult Services Division (YASD) was at one time a single body representing all youth services. Youth services librarians worked together originally as an organized, integrated group. They separated thirty-five years ago to develop unique areas of specialization by type of library and age level. Now in a different and fast changing period of time, youth services librarians are being forced to confront the inescapable fact that they may have to come together again in some way to provide more effective service to a shrinking youth population beset by tremendous social and cultural change and unrelenting rapid technological development.
