Abstract
Using a versatile and effective three-dimensional finite element method, the stress concentration present around the intersection of unreinforced two normally intersecting cylinders and two 45 deg. lateral connections is evaluated. Complicated structural behavior in the vicinity of the region with its sharp variation of geometric discontinuity is investigated under the several different types of loading such as inplane moment, out-of-plane moment and torsion as well as an internal pressure loading. The stress indices are deduced and then compared with the present ASME code implementation regarding intersecting cylinders.
The dynamic behavior of 45 deg. lateral connections is investigated by a dynamic transient analysis and by a dynamic simulation method via a loading combination approach using the three-dimensional finite element analysis. As results of comparison of two different methods of analysis, the conservatism inherent in the ASME code is addressed.
Based on a limited study which utilized two different aspect ratios, d/D = 0.52 and 1.0, in intersecting cylinder problems, geometric effects as well as boundary effects on stress concentration in the vicinity of the intersection are also evaluated. The effect of presence of torsion in intersecting cylinders is emphasized not to be overlooked, which is the most significant stress raiser in the intersecting cylinder problems.
Considering the limited study in this study the parametric study of unreinforced 45 deg. laterals with a wide range of d/D, D/T, and d/t ratios is recommended under the various loading conditions. Fatigue evaluation of lateral connection is also recommended due to the fact that the effect on stress concentration of the intersecting cylinder problems by torsion is enormous.
