Abstract
Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of supplementing three different forages (low quality tall fescue hay, good quality tall fescue hay and tropical star grass hay) containing .26% S, .25% S and .20% S respectively with an isofulfurous quantity of either sodium sulfate or DL methionine.
The addition of 1% urea to low quality fescue, good quality fescue and star grass hay stimulated in vitro cellulose digestion. Supplementation of these three forages with .05, .10 or .15% from either sodium sulfate or DL methionine also stimulated cellulose digestion (P < .05). There were no differences between S source.
In vivo experiments involved the use of twelve crossbred lambs (av. wt. of 34, 26 and 28 kg for the low quality fescue, good quality fescue and star grass experiments) which were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: forage, with no added S, forage with .15% S as sodium sulfate and forage with .15% S as DL methionine. After completion of trial one, lambs were rerandomized and the trial was replicated. Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) and Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) digestibilities were improved (P < .01) by S supplementation to low quality fescue regardless of sulfur source. N retention was not significantly affected by treatment. Essential amino acids (% of total) were higher (P < .01) for lambs receiving .15% sulfate-S diet. Molar % of methionine was increased (P < .01) by the addition of S whereas phenylalanine and glycine concentrations decreased with sulfur addition. Serum taken from lambs fed .15% methionine-S contained more histidien (P < .05) while lambs fed .15% sulfate-S had less serum glycine.
