Abstract
The purpose of the study was to compare the opinions of selected groups of Illinois secondary school music students, music teachers, principals, superintendents and school board members regarding the relative importance of specific objectives for the secondary school music program.
With the advice of a panel of experts, the investigator developed a list of fifty behavioral objectives which included extrinsic and intrinsic outcomes. The objectives encompassed knowledge of the elements of music, music theory and music history, performance skills, listening skills, attitudes and appreciations.
The pool of 180 respondents was stratified according to size of school, size of school district, area of specialization of music teachers, prior musical experience of administrators and school board members and the educational attainment level of school board members. Q-sort enabled the respondents to rank the objectives in order of importance.
The investigator used both descriptive and inferential statistics in treating the data. He used analysis of variance to identify differences in responses among the five school related groups and Scheffe's test to determine the location of the differences.
Results of the study indicated significant differences in the opinions of the students, teachers, principals, superintendents and school board members. Notable differences emerged according to: (1) Specialization (instrumental or choral) of music teachers and students; (2) School size and school district size; (3) Prior musical experience of administrators and school board members.
