Abstract
Widely recognized characteristics of Stendhal's novels such as their musical, theatrical, and expressive qualities are shown to be partly attributable to an almost obsessive use of words describing modalities of speech, i.e. accent, tone, voice and other semantically related terms.
After classifying and analyzing the above mentioned terms in Armance, Le Rouge et le Noir, Lucien Leuwen and La Chartreuse de Parme, the thesis explores their relationship to the context. Such a procedure reveals a narrow link between the way novelistic characters express themselves and Stendhal's own system of values.
This study finally raises the question of an "oral quality" woven into the text of the French novel of early XIXth century, a quality born from Rousseau's influence, and directly correlated to the equation voice/being.
