Abstract
In this thesis, I introduce four major compositions by Chang-Su Koh: Korean Dances, Arirang and Akatonbo, Pansori’c Rhapsody and Sonatine-b. Through my analysis, I explain how Koh skillfully blends a Western style of composition with traditional Korean musical elements. In my analysis, I explain the origins and histories of these traditional Korean musical elements, and I show how Koh has adopted them in his compositions. I then examine the similarities and differences between Koh’s work and two main elements: the traditional folk songs and rhythms that he modifies, and the traditional instruments whose sound he imitates with Western instruments.
