Abstract

The American wind band and the game of baseball are both firmly tied to the American story. Many leading composers and conductors, ranging from John Philip Sousa and Charles Ives to 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning composer, John Luther Adams, have expressed their captivation by America's game through word and song. My research specifically examines the wind band's usage in the early years of baseball, including appearances of Albert Austin Harding's University of Illinois Band at George Huff's Varsity Baseball games, prior to the Marching Illinis performances at football games. The research will culminate in a performance of music written for and about the game of baseball in mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, re-scored for the modern Wind Band.
