- Abstract
- Cellular interaction with their environment is an incredibly complicated collection of interrelating processes; one that the scientific community has been trying to elucidate. These interactions affect the way we grow, heal, and live, and a disruption of any kind could have profound consequences. In our case, we are most interested in the interaction of cancerous cells with their environment and exploring the question of how they remodel their surroundings to better suit their own growth. This Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy image demonstrates the end result of culturing cancerous cells in an alginate hydrogel network under conditions that stimulate the cells to redesign the material structure. By better understanding these intricate interactions between cancer and environment, we will be able to specifically target them for therapies of the future.
