Abstract

For a composer, a staff paper represents the time and space of what he/she tries to record. For me, the five lines of tessitura matching with the frequencies to be articulated by musical instruments are my imaginary space, and the bars and systems controlled sometimes by analogue notation such as Andante or Moderato, or digital notation, e.g., crotchet equals 120, represents time. So I write music as adding the spatial fresh on top of the skeleton of time, as French composer Gerard Grisey said. Before 2013, I mainly wrote my music by hand-writing, and I enjoyed the beautiful trajectories of the record of my personal time on the actual papers. This image is made up with 25 pages of my guiter-duet piece, an air oscillates, the earth bells for three days which I hand-wrote back in 2012. The title Sculpting in Time is from the book written by old Soviet film director, Andrei Tarkowski, from which I learned not only his aesthetical viewpoints, but also his mastery of handling the cinematic (musical, in my case) time.
