Abstract
"Chapter 1 examines Herbert's family's role in inculcating and maintaining Herbert's aristocratic status. This chapter also treats the influence of Westminster School and Cambridge University in fortifying class-consciousness. Chapter 2 explores ""The Church-Porch"" as Herbert's early attempt to gain public notice and to solidify his class community around notions of civility and honor. Chapter 3 looks at Herbert's The Country Parson and the context of the priestly occupation in Stuart England. This manual for country priests expresses many of the aristocratic values of the active local gentry and the commonwealth ideology. Chapter 4 focuses on the notions of commonwealth ideology expressed in Herbert's poetry. The first part of the chapter examines commonwealth virtues and commonwealth tropes. The second part focuses on how Herbert's poems express concern for threats to the commonwealth---war, religious separatism, social disorder, and court corruption---and on how several poems portray God as a responsible, benevolent country aristocrat---in effect, the ideal commonwealth man."
