Abstract
"This dissertation makes several contributions. First, it provides a theoretical foundation and a methodology for estimating sources of complementarity and substitution among the alliance partners. Second, by identifying the characteristics that drive the matching of firms and faculty, the model explains why certain firm-scientists partnerships attain superior performance. It also generates useful insights for firms that seek to attract better partners, particularly ""star"" faculty. Third, it introduces a theory of alliance formation and partner selection that explicitly deals with the endogeneity problem created by the self-selection of the ties in specific alliances."
