Abstract
The research concludes that the spatial context of HIV/AIDS-related health and preventive behaviors cannot be properly understood without looking at the role of health and health care in people's lives and that these roles differ in rural, peri-urban and urban areas, an idea that propels the medical geographic research agenda. One cannot ignore the global and national issues that help create such an unfavorable climate for many Kisumu District residents. Furthermore, attitudes by individuals and communities help shape AIDS-related experiences locally. It is clear that issues of empowerment and entitlement especially influenced AIDS protective behaviors. The research formed linkages between behavioral science and social science. The thesis asserts that everyday people responded to the disease in their own ways and condom use was clearly not the answer. Location specific strategies are necessary because different places have different needs and aspirations.
