Abstract
This project offers a synthesis of the leisure and poverty research. It reveals some of the creative responses that people use to negotiate balance in their struggles with poverty. Although the participants used a number of strategies to respond to their daily life conditions, leisure emerged as a salient part of the negotiation process that the working poor use to bring balance and control to their lives. This work challenges those who explore the contexts of people in poverty to recognize leisure as a significant life domain. It also challenges leisure researchers to recognize the situated nature of leisure in the multiple domains of life, and to explore how different types of leisure activity contexts might affect stability and stress levels in everyday life. Methodologically, it demonstrates how verbal and visual research techniques can be combined to provide a more comprehensive understanding of complex social phenomena.
