Abstract
Finally, Chapter Three analyzes the explosion of texts around the figure of the Don Juan, another archetypical representative of Spanish masculinity. I study Unamuno's play Nada menos que todo un hombre and Perez de Ayala's novel Tigre Juan as critiques Don Juan as symbol of Spanish virility. In these two works Don Juan is confronted by a protagonist that does not only spend his time seducing women; rather, he is a productive, prosperous and hard-working businessman: the opposite of the idle aristocrat who spends his time in amorous pursuits. The novels conclusions present a new perspective on masculinity and Spanishness that combines work, profit and family stability in a country that has perennially rejected the value of work.
