Abstract
A close look at three specific operas from different periods of Verdi's life, Macbeth, Il trovatore, and Don Carlo will show that he successfully negotiated the balance between artistic freedom and political commitment. For that reason his operas satisfied the patriots of the 19th-century, but continue to draw large audiences today.
