- Abstract
- "This image is part of a project that focuses on O'Hare International Airport and the recent set of innovations implemented on its territory. It argues that the restructuring envisioned by the O'Hare Modernization Plan is symptomatic of a wave of globalization processes that produce new articulations of the local and the global and reorganizes space along existing structures of inequality. The plan itself positions O'Hare on track to become an aerotropolis the vital core, around which global cities are being organized. The paper provides an overview of globalization literature that discusses ""spaces of globalization"" and ""spaces of flows,"" territorialization and deterritorialization, geographic scales and the relationship between the local and the global. It deploys the methods of visual sociology in the collection of photographic data from the airport and its surroundings. It includes the collected photographs as visual evidence that lends support to its central arguments and provides an analysis of the data. Finally, it offers a brief discussion of the emerging structures of inequality produced by O'Hare's move towards the aerotropolis mode."
