Abstract
"The development of domain ontologies and the process of open/axial coding outlined by Strauss & Corbin's (1998) grounded theory methods bear important similarities that point towards opportunities for ""cross-fertilization"" (Star, 1998). While ontology development owes much to knowledge and software engineering practices, ultimately ""knowledge representation endeavours are always a kind of sociological work"" (Ribes & Bowker, in press). Recognizing this, Kuziemsky, et al. (2007) demonstrated the potential of blending grounded theory (GT) with ontology development methods while creating a GT-based ontology for a palliative care system.
This poster explores the potential of applying a blended approach to understanding the information included in unstructutured cultural heritage collection descriptions."
