- Abstract
- While it is well known that neutrophils perform phagocytosis, a new mechanism of pathogen clearance has emerged known as NETosis. NETosis is the process by which a neutrophil expels its cellular contents in order to capture and destroy foreign pathogens. The following image displays the discovery and confirmation of neutrophil extracellular traps being formed in the bovine uterine endometrium for the first time. The sample was stained using Anti-Neutrophil Elastase 1 Antibody (green) to confirm the cell is a neutrophil and Hoechst (blue) to confirm that the cell has a nucleus. Together, these two stains confirm that NETosis occurs in the bovine uterus. Special thanks to Dr. Phil Cardoso, the members of the Dairy Focus Lab in the Animal Science Department, and the members of the Institute for Genomic Biology Core Facilities for the support of my finding.
