- Abstract
- Sometimes I feel left alone even more after talking with my family, who live in Korea, through a video call, text messaging. While they looks and sounds as if they are only a few feet away through 2D screen of video calls, there is nonetheless a sense of being separated by an invisible, but impenetrable, wall. Inspired by my experience, my research focuses on extending the space of user experience beyond just visual and auditory information by enabling the transmission of emotional and tactile information in 3D space to provide a greater sense of closeness and human warmth to computer-mediated communication. I developed a soft robotic smartphone case as an interactive 3D interface to fully reflect users’ emotions with non-verbal languages and sensation of touch. Called “Emot,” the robot detects user’s emotions based on user’s facial expression and context of text message, and conveys them with his soft moving arms, as well as through the changing colors of his body and an eye contact. Also embedded sensors in Emot’s squishy body allow him to be responsive to user and promote tactile interaction. In the near future, I hope to apply my research to education and rehabilitation of children with autism.
